The White House Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Cinco de Mayo or Cinco de Drinko?
An Essay Exploring the Effects of the Americanization of Cinco de Mayo

If it's not Mexican Independence Day, what is it???

Contrary to popular believe, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican independence day! In fact, save for Puebla, Mexico, the majority of Mexicans don't even celebrate the day. Some may acknowledge it, as Americans might acknowledge the day the rebels won the Battle of Bunker Hill or the union won the Battle of Gettysburg. Mexican independence day is actually later in the year— September 16th. So what is Cinco de Mayo, if not Mexican independence day?

Why is Cinco de Mayo Celebrated?
Cinco de Mayo is actually the celebration of the victory of the Mexican Army over the French in the 1862 battle of Puebla.  It is celebrated because it commemorates the victory of Mexicans over the French imperialists. The battle is important because the Mexican army leaders, General Ignacio Zaragosa and General Brigadier Porfirio Díaz were able to trick the French army, therefore proving that wit can overcome imperialist strength. Therefore, if you answered "The anniversary of the Battle of Puebla" to question #1, you got it right!

Where is Cinco de Mayo Celebrated?
It is celebrated in Puebla, Mexico, the site of the battle, as well as a few other cities and Northern Mexico and the United States. So, if you answered "USA and Northern Mexico" to question #2, you're in luck!
